Common Sinusitis Treatments

There are three primary approaches to treating chronic sinusitis.

  • Medical Therapy
The first treatment for cases of sinusitis is usually medication. Antibiotics or topical nasal steroid sprays are often successful in reducing mucosal swelling, fighting infection and relieving obstructions of the sinus opening (ostium). Inhaling steam or using saline nasal sprays or drops can also help relieve sinus discomfort. However, at least 20% of patients do not respond adequately to medications.

  • Balloon Sinuplasty
Over the last several years, Balloon Sinuplasty has emerged as an effective option that may complement existing approaches to treating chronic cases of sinusitis. Balloon Sinuplasty is a cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedure that utilizes a small, flexible, sinus balloon catheter that is placed into the nose to dilate blocked sinuses.

  • Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) involves the use of a small endoscope to navigate specialized instruments in the nose and nasal cavities. The procedure enlarges the sinus opening through the removal of bone and tissue that was causing obstruction.
